What Causes the Need for Teeth Extractions?

There are several reasons why a person would likely need a tooth removed. Your permanent teeth are meant to last you a lifetime, but sometimes they must be removed due to injury, infection, decay, or overcrowding. In some cases, your wisdom teeth may need to be removed.

It is a common misconception that everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed, but some patients experience no issue with them. Some dentists will recommend having your wisdom teeth removed before they grow through the gum line because it is easier and safer to remove wisdom teeth before the roots are formed. By removing wisdom teeth before they are fully developed, you will be able to recover from the procedure much quicker.

Who Is a Candidate for Teeth Extractions?

In unfortunate cases, teeth may become damaged or infected and can cause severe pain. If you experience any of these issues, call our office immediately before the problem becomes much worse. If you are unsure about whether or not a tooth needs to be removed, one of our specialists can help you determine the best course of action. Sometimes an issue can be resolved without removing the tooth, such as with root canal treatment or other restorative procedures.

There can be many benefits to having a tooth removed, especially if it is giving you many problems. If you need teeth extraction, call All Smiles Dentistry and schedule an appointment with our amazing dental professionals!

What Happens During the Procedure?

Having a tooth removed is simple in many cases. Recovery typically only takes a few days. Before the tooth is removed, our dentist will give you a local anesthetic or some other form of sedation to numb the area as well as help you relax. If a tooth is impacted, hidden below the gum line, the dentist will cut away the gum and bone tissue that is covering the tooth that needs to be removed. Once this is done, the dentist will remove the tooth using special tools. In some cases, a tooth that is hard to remove must be removed in pieces.

Once the tooth is completely removed, the area is cleaned and stitches are placed in the extraction site. Your dentist will instruct you on how to care for the area where the tooth was removed until it is fully healed. You may also be provided with a follow-up appointment to ensure everything heals perfectly.

I am very satisfied with my experience at the all-new All Smiles Dentistry. Alyssia, my hygienist, was very professional and explained all procedures clearly. Dr. Killeen took the time to visit and, although I know he was busy, did not give me the impression that he was in a hurry. I am so glad I stayed with All Smiles Dentistry.
